Tyson Beckford has claimed he is not concerned by the prospect of a sex tape surfacing that supposedly shows him pleasuring himself.

The hunky male model took to Twitter to say he is unfazed that the clip is making the rounds and even joked that the video is "not much of a sex tape".

However, Beckford is unlikely to have been wearing a condom on the film, as TMZ.com reported the footage is rumoured to show the 41-year-old touching himself during a video chat with an unnamed female model.

He stated: "Don't even faze me ... We all do it, just mine got caught on film."

TMZ explained the video is currently being passed around the adult film industry and also shows him speaking about a number of topics, such as his movie career - which includes an appearance as himself in Zoolander - and his annoyance at often being mistaken for US R&B singer Tyrese Gibson.

Men having difficulty performing for long periods in the bedroom may wish to consider using special types of condoms.

Dr John Tomlinson, a trustee of the Sexual Advice Association - a charitable organisation aiming to improve sexual health for men and women - has noted there are a number of products guys can try in an effort to combat premature ejaculation.

This is according to a new survey funded by the charity Relate and Ann Summers, which involved more than 25,000 respondents.

And the results of the Sex Census 2012 suggest those in middle age may need to stock up on condoms as it was revealed 52 per cent of respondents between 50 and 59 believe they have a good sex life.

Indeed, just one-fifth of those in this age bracket admitted they are unhappy with their bedroom antics.

Despite this, it was shown that 30-something men and women are the least satisfied when the lights go down, with worries about money and family having a negative impact on this age group in particular.

Paula Hall, sex therapist for Relate, said: "The results tell us that this age group actually want more sex, so people need to take time to work out what's stopping them."

Jason Warriner, clinical director at the Terrence Higgins Trust - a charity established in response to the HIV epidemic - noted efforts must be made to ensure people use prophylactics to prevent them becoming infected with the disease in the first place.

His comments come in response to new guidelines issued by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and reported by UNAIDS, which advised couples to accompany one another when going for HIV testing, as this will enable people to know the status of their partner.

Mr Warriner noted people should be encouraged to "get screened and to get tested and treated. People with numerous partners should use condoms and also get sexual health checks".

He explained the WHO suggestion could be an appropriate approach for those in a long and solid relationship, as it can prove a way of showing support for each other.

This is according to Emil Ng, associate director at the Family Institute of the University of Hong Kong, who noted individuals in the area have no place to have sex and are therefore known to have the least sexual knowledge around the world, the Associated Press reports.

But increasing numbers might soon be stocking up on condoms and other sexual goods if they choose to overcome the prohibitive nature of Hong Kong and try to dispose of the population's label of sexual timidity.

The expert is one of the organisers behind the Hong Kong Sex Cultural Festival, which is held jointly by the Hong Kong Sex Education Association and the Family Planning Association of Hong Kong.

"Hong Kong is always near the bottom of the list in terms of sexual frequency in those Durex annual surveys," the industry figure pointed out, adding that although the research may not be very scientific, it says a lot about the people residing in the city and their after-dark habits.

Stress at work is affecting the sex lives of many female employees throughout the UK, new research has found.

Carried out by Grazia magazine, the survey revealed six out of ten women believe their bedroom antics are being significantly hampered by concerns about their job, the Metro reports.

According to the poll, an increasing number of women are feeling anxious about their professional roles, with around one-third putting in more hours in an effort to make sure their positions are safe.

Stocking up on condoms may be something health-conscious older people wish to do in order to stay safe despite their age.

New research published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine has shown that a high number of individuals over the age of 65 are sexually active.

The findings were based on the National Health and Sexuality Service and looked at the bedroom antics of senior citizens in Spain.

It was demonstrated that while 37 per cent of women in this demographic are partaking in physical contact of this nature, the same can be said for 62 per cent of men.

Domingo Palacios, a researcher at the Rey Juan Carlos University in Madrid - which was created in 1996 - said: "This research lets us know the reality of a social phenomenon which is not tackled enough in Spain: sexuality and the elderly."

Mr Palacios noted the findings could be used to promote healthy sexual practices among older generations.
 

Women on a night out may be more affected by beer goggles than men, new research has suggested.

Carried out by investigators at London's Roehampton University, the study revealed alcohol can serve to cloud a girl's mind to a greater degree than a guy's.

Packing condoms on a night out might therefore prove a wise move for both males and females, as people need to be prepared should one thing lead to another.

According to the report, ladies had greater difficulty judging whether or not a face was symmetrical - a commonly-held marker of attractiveness - once they had consumed an alcoholic beverage.

Lewis Halsey, leader of the study, which is to be published in the journal Addiction, said: "What we have shown is that people's ability to detect symmetry is part of the explanation for the beer goggle effects."

He added the findings could have significant consequences, especially as many people admit to having met their partner while inebriated.
 

A military academy's first-ever gay pride event saw participants competing in a Condom Olympics.

Prophylactics were handed out for prizes as part of the celebration at Norwich University in the US, which was permitted following the lifting of the 'don't ask, don't tell' rule that prevented gays and lesbians serving in the armed forces from revealing their sexual orientation, the Associated Press reports.

Included in the week were classes that saw cadets in uniform given advice on how to handle any bullying or harassment they may encounter.

Michael Kelley, vice-president at the learning institute - which was founded in 1819 as the American Literary, Scientific and Military Academy - noted the institute was one of the first of its kind to accept female cadets, adding: "It's saying that we as a military community are looking to more to the future, that we're not quibbling about the past, what was or what wasn't."

He explained moves like this show the academy is taking a leadership role and helping its students become more enlightened.

Condom use among young adults and sexually-active teenagers in Canada appears to be on the rise, judging by newly-released figures.

Statistics Canada has revealed the percentage of individuals from this demographic engaging in this form of safe sex in 2009-2010 was 68 per cent - markedly higher than the 62 per cent recorded in 2003.

Sarah Flicker, associate professor of environmental studies at Toronto's York University - which is the third-largest such institute in the country - said it is "great" that an increasing number of 15 to 24-year-olds are recognising the need to make use of prophylactics when getting intimate.

However, Ms Flicker noted the results also show that a high number of youngsters are failing to do the same, adding: "It's a huge problem that almost three-in-ten are not using protection when they're having sex."

According to the investigation, around two-thirds of people in this age range have had sexual intercourse on at least one occasion - a sum that was little different to that reported in 2003.

Tulisa Contostavlos has confirmed to fans that it is indeed her appearing in a video showing a female performing a sexual act on a male.

Carried out by Dulux, the survey found those living in West Yorkshire typically have sex around 66 times a year.

This works out as significantly more than the national average of 42 and means individuals from Bradford get busy between the sheets almost three times as much as those who call Ipswich home.

The paint firm conducted the poll in order to see whether or not a couple's bedroom antics might be spiced up with a change of colour to the walls.

A number of US HIV hot spots have been identified in a new study, suggesting targeted condom campaigns in these regions could prove beneficial.

Joint results from a network of research organisations, including ICAP at Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health, found the infection rates of black women in certain areas are around five time higher than the overall levels predicted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

In its assessment of 2,099 females - of which 88 per cent were black - the HIV Prevention Trials Network's 064 Women's HIV Seroincidence Study revealed an HIV incidence of 0.24 per cent.

As part of the report, six regions were looked at - Atlanta, Raleigh-Durham, Washington DC, Baltimore, Newark and New York City.

Dr Wafaa El-Sadr, ICAP director, said: "This study confirms that black women in these US hotspots have disproportionately been affected by HIV."

The expert added prevention efforts - that could include condom campaigns - are tailored to the communities particularly affected.

China is to place greater emphasis on the promotion of condoms in a bid to prevent the spread of HIV and Aids.

The nation's government announced plans to cap the number of people living with the disease at 1.2 million by 2015, Reuters reports.

This figure currently stands at around 780,000 and authorities in China are hopeful more widespread use of the prophylactic will prove successful in slowing down the rate.

According to the State Council, bringing a halt to the problem will be no easy task, yet note was made of the country's progress in being able to improve the life expectancy of Aids patients.

On a statement appearing on the government's website, the group observed: "The present spread of Aids is still severe, there is widespread discrimination in society, the virus is a serious [problem] in some areas and amongst high-risk groups."

It pointed out other sexually transmitted diseases are also on the rise in the nation, while Aids is also being spread primarily through sexual means.

Females in the US often use condoms less frequently as their first year in college progresses, a new study has found.

Published in the Journal of Sex Research, the investigation revealed this is particularly true of young women who binge drink.

The findings - which also claim ladies from less affluent backgrounds and those with lower grade point averages are likely to indulge in unprotected sex - may be especially alarming as this stage in a person's life tends to be one when they are highly active in the bedroom.

Jennifer Walsh, a researcher with the Centres for Behavioural and Preventive Medicine at the Miriam Hospital - which has roots back to 1907 - said: "College women often engage in serial monogamy, resulting in multiple partners during the college years and they are often unaware of their partners' risk."

She added being able to identify shifts in behaviour associated with a reduced use of prophylactics could result in more targeted intervention efforts and educational programmes being drawn up.

It appears British people are not quite so reserved in their bedroom antics as often presumed, judging by the finding of a new study.

Carried out by Good Mobile Phones, the study found 26 per cent of respondents who own a camera phone have got a sex photo or video stored on the devices - suggesting condoms are not the only naughty product they carry about their person.

According to the findings, 12 per cent of those questioned admitted to having rude snaps of their ex partner on their handset, while almost two-thirds of them revealed the files on the gadget are not protected by a password - meaning anybody could view the images if they get their hands on the mobile.

Free condoms are to be handed out in Thailand as the country gets ready for Valentines Day.

In an attempt to promote safe sex throughout the south-east Asian nation, more than 60 million of the products will be distributed to groups deemed to be high-risk, the Bangkok Post reports.

The scheme is being carried out by the Public Health Ministry and sex workers, teenagers and young adults are all being targeted for the special day, which takes place annually on February 14th.

Launching the campaign, director general of the Disease Control Department Pornthep Siriwanarangsan explained ministry of health car units across Thailand are to hand out the prophylactics.

In addition, those who fear they are at risk have the opportunity to visit one of the 282 centres located in 43 provinces that will offer screenings for sexually transmitted infections.

Sponsors of the project - in addition to the Disease Control Department - include the National Health Security Office and the Global Fund to Fight Aids, Malaria and Tuberculosis.

Sales of gay condoms in the US could be about to rise after a rights group claimed same-sex marriages are here to stay.

Rea Carey of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force noted such unions will continue in America despite opposition from social conservatives, AFP reports.

Speaking at a gathering of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender activists in Baltimore, the representative stated: "Absolutely. The trajectory is moving forward. It's clear."

She explained the general public is becoming increasingly accepting of the idea of same-sex weddings, while those who are against such partnerships are starting to concede the likelihood of them becoming legal in more than just the seven states they are now.

Ms Carey added: "We fall in love, we create families - and we want the same protections that other families have."

It appears people in Britain need to open up about the issue of sex, judging by the findings of new research.

Carried out by Aviva, the study found the topic of intimacy to be the conversation type families in the nation find the most uncomfortable.

The investigation suggests parents may be missing out on the opportunity to speak to their children about big issues such as safe sex and the importance of using a condom.

It was found that 56 per cent of those questioned cited bedroom antics as the topic they enjoy speaking of least, while other areas that people dislike include debt, finances and death.

Louise Colley, head of protection at Aviva, which is the sixth-largest insurance group in the world, noted nobody enjoys thinking about mortality, "but by denying that illness - or worse - is even a possibility, people are stopping themselves putting measures in place to protect their loved ones".

Young people in the UK need to receive better sexual education when it comes to relationships and condoms, it has been suggested.

Lisa Power, policy director at Terrence Higgins Trust - which is the largest HIV and sexual health charity in the UK - said her organisation is campaigning for such lessons in schools to become compulsory, claiming it is clear that youngsters are not receiving high-quality education in this regard at the moment.

The industry figure noted - under the current systems - that individuals are not taught how to insist somebody wears a condom and are not told how they can say no if they do not wish to proceed with a sexual act.

She stated: "If you look at other countries we know that good quality sex and relationships education actually delays the age at which young people choose to have sex."

Porn stars in Los Angeles (LA) may soon be required to wear condoms during filming after lawmakers voted in favour of such regulations.

To be confirmed next week, the City Council's vote resulted in an 11-to-one judgement in favour of the prophylactics being worn on set, the AFP reports.

The Aids Healthcare Foundation - which is based in LA and provides advocacy to more than 100,000 individuals in 22 countries - has been campaigning for the move for some time and Michael Weinstein, president of the organisation, said the result is a step in the right direction.

However, the adult film industry remains in objection to the ruling and porn star Nina Hartley explained there are concerns that wearing the products for long scenes - which can last anywhere between 30 minutes and an hour - could result in chafing and other problems.

She added: "I know it looks different from the outside, but it will not work to protect anybody."

The number of young Indians wearing condoms while having sex needs to improve, new research has suggested.

Carried out by the Population Council, the study - entitled Condom Use Before Marriage and its Correlates: Evidence from India - revealed just 27 per cent of young men in the country who are indulging in sexual practices before tying the knot are using the products, Reuters reports.

In addition, the investigation found the same can be said for only seven per cent of women in such circumstances.

As part of the study, 2,408 unmarried individuals between the ages of 15 and 24 who have had sex were questioned on their actions between the sheets.

The authors of the report noted: "Our findings highlight that pre-marital sexual experiences were unprotected for most youth."

According to the team from the Population Council - which has operated for almost 30 years - the results corroborate previous findings that showed female in premarital relationships are less likely to wear condoms than their male counterparts.

The use of condoms appears to be successfully combating a HIV and Aids epidemic in New Zealand.

New figures released by the Aids Epidemiology Group at the University of Otago revealed there were 58 new diagnoses of HIV in the country in the first six months of 2011, which was markedly down on the 71 reported for the same period one year earlier.

And it seems the improvement may have come as a result of a novel approach taken by the New Zealand Aids Foundation (NZAF) to glamorise the use of condoms.

The organisation launched its Get it On! initiative in 2009, which aimed to make the products more sexy for gay and bisexual men.

Shaun Robinson, executive director at NZAF - which has been in operation for 25 years - noted: "The best scientific research and evidence available said that appealing marketing and a powerful online presence on the sites that gay men actually go to would increase rates of condom use."

Mr Robinson added the statistics prove this was the right approach to take and has been successful in reducing transmission of the disease.
 

Men who catch a sexually transmitted infection (STI) as a result of failing to wear a condom while having intercourse may find their body scent is affected as a consequence.

This is because scientists in Russia have discovered guys with gonorrhea can smell putrid to females, MSNBC reports.

Investigators from the Institute of Cytology and Genetics in Novosibirsk - which was first organised in 1957 - looked into the matter to see if humans, like animals, are less attracted to would-be mates who are infected with disease.

Mikhail Moshkin, lead author of the report, which has been published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine, noted: "Our research revealed that infection disease reduces odour attractiveness in humans."

Tests involved in the study saw women rank the smell of sweat samples - taken from male armpits - of men both with and without the STI.

The scent of infected men was positioned less than half as high as that from healthy participants.

People who enjoy a night on the town may be wise to carry condoms whenever they choose to head out for a drink.

This is because new research appearing in the journal Addiction - which has been published since 1884 by the Society for the Study of Addiction to Alcohol and other Drugs - has shown that imbibing can have a direct impact on whether or not an individual chooses to have unsafe sex.

According to the findings, the more a person drinks, the greater his or her intention becomes to engage in sexual relations without protection.

Principal investigator of the study Dr J Rehm noted these results should be promoted as a major factor in preventative efforts for HIV.

Dr Rehm added the finding "also helps explain why people at risk often show this behaviour despite better knowledge: alcohol is influencing their decision processes".

The authors noted future HIV prevention programmes should therefore consider the results of the study.
 

Enough signatures have now been collected in Los Angeles to ensure that the issue of whether the use of condoms should become mandatory in the porn industry can be voted upon by residents of the area.

The Aids Healthcare Foundation worked with numerous stars of the adult film industry to generate support and last week they announced the signatures will be submitted for a ballot initiative next year.

If made law, the act would mean that all film permits distributed in the city condition the use of condoms and periodic inspection of adult film sets to ensure compliance.

President of the organisation Michael Weinstein said performers in pornographic content have the right to health and safety laws afforded to them. But until now, the condom use has not been tied to whether or not a film permit is given. The California Code of Regulations already includes a clause for producers of adult movies to ensure "barrier protection" is utilised, although this is "consistently" violated, said Brian Chade, assistant general counsel for the foundation.

However, first amendment attorney Paul Cambria was quoted by the AVN Media Network suggesting that such an act would go against constitutional rights. The permit department, he explained, is not authorised to enforce health rules.

When the topic of safe sex and condoms comes up with a potential partner, the best way to find out whether you are on the same page is to just "be honest".

This is according to college newspaper editor Dante Geoffrey, who discussed the matter with co-editor Brittany Bradley in a recent article for the State Hornet.

Being direct and gentle when approaching the issue will also help, but do not avoid the topic, as this will make it into a far bigger problem than it needs to be, they agreed.

"If you feel that you can't talk about it comfortably then you're probably talking to the wrong person," Mr Geoffrey added.

Not only is contraception important for preventing unwanted pregnancy, but condoms are crucial for protection against sexually transmitted infections. Health Protection Agency figures from 2010 show that the peak age for STIs in men is between 20 and 23 years old and for women it is 19 and 20 years old.
 

Female condoms are still not widely available in the Americas even though HIV/Aids is spreading rapidly through the female population of this region.

That is according to research by the International Universal Access to Female Condoms, which has found that many people living in countries across this area are not benefitting from the safe sex option the prophylactic offers, Inside Costa Rica reports.

For instance, in Mexico - a nation that is currently battling against rising numbers of HIV/Aids cases among women - the government has only just began a small-scale operation to distribute female condoms.

Meanwhile, the prophylactic was not offered as a choice in Argentina last year, despite the fact 39 million contraceptives of various types were issued throughout 2010.

Recently, research by professionals at the University of Michigan established that young men with high levels of testosterone are more likely to use condoms than their peers with lower counts of the hormone. 

The importance of safe sex and always using a condom has been underlined by new findings that show the number of HIV cases in Northern Ireland (NI) is on the rise.

Published by the Public Health Agency (PHA), the figures revealed a 20 per cent increase on these levels throughout the country last year.

According to the study, there were 79 new diagnosis incidents in 2010, which means the total number of individuals living with HIV in Ireland climbed to 470.

Louise Herron of the PHA - which was established in 2009 - said: "People have to take some responsibility for themselves and remember to use condoms [and] limit their number of partners."

Ms Herron recommended those who feel they may be at risk should make sure they take the time to get tested sooner rather than later, adding the PHA has to keep finding novel ways to raise more awareness of the issue.
 

A landmark building in Amsterdam is to be covered by a giant condom to raise awareness about the importance of safe sex.

The Stop Aids Now! organisation is to drape the Munt tower in the Netherlands city with a 35-metre prophylactic ahead of World Aids Day on Thursday December 1st.

It is to be rolled down over the building by actors from the youth television series SpangaS and it is hoped the move will highlight the need for greater education regarding the prevention of HIV and Aids.

Following the stunt, the performers will also hand out red Aids ribbons and autographed condoms to those passing by.

The sheath is to remain on the tower until the night time, but the national campaign Education Saving Lives will continue until December 6th, with bus shelters carrying the safe sex message.

Stop Aids Now! was formed in 2000 when Aids Fonds joined forces with the Dutch organisations ICCO, Cordaid, Hivos and Oxfam Novib.

Young men with greater levels of testosterone are more likely to use condoms when getting intimate with a partner, new research has shown.

Investigators from the University of Michigan - which was founded in Detroit in 1817 as the University of Michigania - revealed these guys are more prone to engage in safe sex than their less testosterone-fuelled peers as they have a positive attitude to prophylactics.

As part of the study, a total of 78 men, aged 18 or 19 and starting their first year of college, were asked about their sexual practices and preferences.

To measure their testosterone rates, the participants also gave a saliva sample.

Sari Van Anders, from the learning institute, told LiveScience the reason behind the findings may be because it requires more confidence for a teenager to insist a condom is used.

She noted: "Perhaps safer sex seems especially risky and status-oriented for college-age straight-identified men who are just starting out."

Hilary Clinton has called for more people throughout the world to increase their condom use and other forms of safe sex methods.

The US secretary of state would like to see greater adoption of antiviral drugs, circumcision and other tactics to help prevent the spread of HIV and create an Aids-free generation.

Speaking at the National Institutes of Health, Ms Clinton - who was the first lady of the US when her husband Bill was president between 1993 and 2001 - observed America-led technological advances have played a big part in combating the virus.

She explained people of today have the opportunity to give those living in the future the possibility of an existence that does not feature the disease.

"An Aids-free generation would be one of the greatest gifts the US could give to our collective future," the politician went on to point out, adding that while such a goal may be ambitious, it is not impossible to achieve.
 

A number of celebrities have signed up for a new safe sex campaign that promotes the use of condoms during intercourse.

Sarah Jessica Parker, Cyndi Lauper and Estelle - whose hits include American Boy featuring Kanye West - are among the famous faces backing the Come Together initiative, which is to air on MTV around the world in November and December.

As part of the project, these stars will be seen sporting the new interpretation of the Aids ribbon, which has been produced thanks to a collaboration between chairman of the American Foundation for Aids Research Kenneth Cole and the MTV Staying Alive Foundation.

Mr Cole said the public service announcement is intended to "provoke the critical dialogue needed to eliminate the devastating results from the stigma associated with the disease, as well as promote the importance of safe sex".

The fashion designer added he hopes the promotion will act as a call-to-arms to raise awareness of the disease among younger generations.
 

The hunt for the best gay condoms in a popular UK seaside resort has got underway thanks to an initiative by the Terrence Higgins Trust (THT).

Brighton's Next Top Condom has been unveiled in the run up to World Aids Day and the initiative will see gay and bisexual men in the area given the opportunity to try out four products before reporting back with the experiences they had.

The prophylactic that gets the most votes will be revealed in 2012 and is to be named the THT condom of choice for distribution in Brighton and Hove.

It all forms part of a wider scheme by the group entitled Informed Passions, which is being financed by the Big Lottery Fund and is looking to benefit the sexual health of gay and bisexual males in the region.

Sue Peters, regional manager in the south of England for THT - which was established as a charity in 1982 - said: "It's important that condoms give men pleasure as well as protection. Sex, after all, should be fun."
 

Life expectancy for people with HIV in the UK has increased by 15 years in the past decade, thanks to modern drugs and earlier treatment, a study suggests.

It has been recommend by a report in the BMJ, that given the advantage of early testing Health authorities should consider more widespread testing for HIV.

The Terrence Higgins Trust that says people at risk should get tested now shares this view.

“Figures suggest 80,000 people in the UK carry HIV, and about 25% are unaware they have the infection.”

“A team led by Dr Margaret May, of the University of Bristol, looked at the life expectancy of the average 20-year-old starting treatment with anti-retroviral drugs between 1996-1999 and 2006-2008.”

The key finding of this report was that between the periods 1996-1999 and 2006 and averaged life expectancy increased from 30 to almost 46 years, according to the data, reported in the BMJ.

It was also found that a women with HIV “could expect to live a decade longer than a man with HIV, perhaps because women are tested for HIV during pregnancy and are likely to start treatment earlier, the study found.”

“Starting anti-retroviral therapy later than guidelines suggest resulted in up to 15 years' loss of life”

'Reassuring'

Co-author Dr Mark Gompels, of North Bristol NHS trust, said: "These results are very reassuring news for current patients and will be used to counsel those recently found to be HIV-positive."

The HIV and sexual health charity Terrence Higgins Trust said it was good news for people with HIV, their families and friends.

Chief executive Sir Nick Partridge said: "It also demonstrates why it's so much better to know if you have HIV. Late diagnosis and late treatment mean an earlier grave, so if you've been at risk for HIV, get tested now.

"Of course, it's not just length of life that's important, but quality of life too, and having HIV can still severely damage your life's chances."

"While so much has changed 30 years on from the start of the epidemic, condoms continue to be the best way to protect yourself and your partner from HIV in the first place."

Young people are being encouraged by the United Nations (UN) to take part in the drawing up of a new strategy to help combat HIV and Aids.

It is hoped an online collaborative project named CrowdOutAids - which is likely to promote the health advantages of using condoms while having sex - will get the youth involved in the initiative.

The internet-based programme will make use of a number of social networking sites, including the popular Facebook and Twitter platforms, to encourage participation.

It is to run for a period of two months and all people between the ages of 15 and 29 are being asked to put forward any ideas they may have.

The Joint UN Programme on HIV/Aids (UNAIDS) - which brings together the resources of the UNAIDS Secretariat and ten UN system organisations - is running the programme and Michel Sidibe, executive director of the body, said: "We're asking youth around the world to debate, draft and work with UNAIDS to implement this new strategy."

According to the National Survey of Family Growth, since 2002 there has been a nine per cent increase in the number of male youths aged between 15 and 19 using condoms in their first sexual encounter.

In addition, six per cent more men within this age demographic are using condoms in conjunction with a female partner using a hormonal contraceptive.

Teen sexual activity appears to have reached a plateau since 2002, with the number of males and females between 15 and 19 admitting to being sexually active remaining at around 43 and 42 per cent respectively for nearly a decade.

The US has been taking its education on contraception seriously recently, with the New York Times reporting that schools in the Big Apple will be required to teach sex education classes, including guidance regarding condoms and other protection.

A youth club in Bath is promoting the idea of safe sex among young people by handing out free condoms.

The prophylactics will be dispensed from a new vending machine at Peasedown Youth Hub, which is being installed by Bath and North East Somerset Council in October, the BBC reports.

Individuals who have discussed condom use with a school nurse or youth worker will be handed a C-card, which they can then use to withdraw the safe sex products.

The machine will also display sexual health advice, as well as agency contact details.

An increase in condom use could be on the cards for Aborigines after it was revealed this group suffers higher rates of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) than other Australians.

Research carried out by the University of New South Wales' Kirby Institute - which was formerly the National Centre in HIV Epidemiology and Clinical Research - revealed 804 Aborigines out of every 100,000 were diagnosed with gonorrhoea last year, the Associated Press reports.

This rate was almost 27 times greater than that recorded for the wider Australian community, which stood at 30 per 100,000.

In addition, the diagnosis rate for infectious syphilis was five times higher, while that for Chlamydia was more than three times larger.

James Ward, an Aborigine in charge of the Kirby's Institute's indigenous health programme, said there were a number of reasons for the findings.

Mr Ward pointed to the average age of the Aborigine population being much younger than the national average, while his people also lacked knowledge regarding STDs and their prevention.

Efforts to combat venereal disease in Ghana are likely to result in the country's citizens using around 200 million condoms in 2011, it has been claimed.

Kyeremeh Atuahene of the Ghana Aids Commission - established in 2002 - made the prediction at the Eastern Regional Dissemination of the National Strategic Plan (NSP) for HIV Prevention for the Period 2011 to 2015, which was held in Koforidua, the Ghana News Agency reports.

The representative explained the NSP is placing increasing emphasis on the correct and sustained use of the prophylactic in order to keep the number of new HIV infections across the country at a low level.

He noted the body is hoping for new cases to be reduced by 50 per cent come 2015, as well as the complete elimination of mother-to-child transmission of the disease.

Carried out by the United Nations Population Fund - which counts reproductive health, population and development strategies and gender equality as its three core areas of work- the study revealed successful initiatives by governments and technical agencies are helping to improve access to the prophylactic.

The investigation demonstrated a number of countries are looking at different ways to overcome the taboos associated with contraception and are being creative in their efforts to better inform the general public about birth control.

Governments are "discovering that the female condom is a tool for women's empowerment, enabling women and adolescent girls to take the initiative to protect their own and their partners' health", the report's authors wrote.

One example of such promotion has been seen in Zimbabwe, where billboards, TV adverts and radio spots have all been employed to highlight the benefits of using female condoms.
 

Young people in New York are to be taught how to wear a condom in an effort to reduce teenage pregnancy levels and limit the spread of sexually transmitted diseases.

Public middle and high schools in the city will be required to teach sex education classes for the first time in nearly two decades - and the curriculum will include lesson regarding the appropriate age for sexual activity, the New York Times reports.

The introduction of the lessons is aimed primarily at black and Latino teens, as city statistics show these youngsters are more likely to have unplanned pregnancies than other demographics.

Linda Gibbs, deputy mayor for health and human services, said the issue is "obviously" something that applies to everyone, but added: "When we look at the biggest disadvantages that kids in our city face, it is blacks and Latinos that are most affected by the consequences of early sexual behaviour."

In July this year, same-sex marriages were legalised in New York for the first time - which could see gay condom purchases increase as a result.
  

The United Nations (UN) is likely to promote the use of condoms as it looks to tackle the growing problem of HIV in Belize.

Its UN Development Programme (UNDP) is looking to treat and prevent the disease among teenagers and young adults across the Central American country - which was once a British colony - the Jamaica Observer reports.

Jeffrey O'Malley, director of the HIV/Aids Group in the UNDP Bureau for Development Policy, said: "Scaling up treatment isn't just a moral imperative, it's a practical possibility, even in poor countries."

The UNDP's efforts will see it manage the $3.1 million (£1.9 million) grant from the Global Fund to Fight Aids, tuberculosis and malaria, with Francisco Roquette, UNDP assistant resident representative in Belize, describing the pairing of the Global Fund and the UNDP as the best of both worlds.

"It's a perfect combination of very global knowledge with very concrete understanding of the challenges," he added.
 

Boys who masturbate on a regular basis are more likely to use condoms when they have full sex, according to the results of a new report.

The study, undertaken by researchers at Indiana University in Indianapolis, discovered 86 per cent of the males who confirmed they had worn a condom the last time they had sex had also admitted to masturbating over the past 12 months.

Out of the 820 teens aged between 14 and 17 who were questioned, sexually active boys who confessed to pleasuring themselves were eight times more likely to use protection when with a partner.

Published in the Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, the report stated: "The findings of this study [on] masturbation should be used by health care providers to inform, educate and reassure adolescents about masturbation to provide competent and comprehensive sexuality education in the clinical setting."
